If you have laminate floors then you are definitely going to be in need of a good laminate floor cleaner. In order to pick the right product for this job you need to have a basic understanding about what laminate floors really are. To begin with what they are not is wood. They are made to look this way but in fact they are a synthetic type floor covering.
Most often, if you are the person responsible for having the laminate floors installed then most often the manufacturer will supply you with some instructions on which is the best product to use and the proper care of them. On the other hand, if you have moved into a house where the laminate floor already exists then you may not be sure just what cleaner to use.
You are going to find that you have a couple of choices. You can purchase a laminate floor cleaner or you can make your own solution. Both work equally as well, although you may find it less expensive to make your own.
You will probably come across many variations for home cleaning products for your laminate floors but the most important thing to remember is not to use any product that contains ammonia. The problem with this is that it could very easily strip the sealant from the laminate.
Now knowing what you cannot use there are simple household products that you can use and the most cost effective as well. The best is probably just plain vinegar and water. A mixture of about 1/2 cup to a one-gallon pail of water will do it.
Another thing you do not want to do is saturate your floor with the cleaner that you have made. The excess water could seep into the laminate and damage it over a period of time. So ideally, you want to damp mop it. This is best achieved with soaking your mop in the water and vinegar solution then wringing it out tightly. If you want to dry the floor quickly, you can just rub over the wet area with a dry towel.
Sometimes if the laminate has built up grime and grease, you may want to use something a little stronger to clean it. In this case, you can use a mild dish soap or even baby shampoo as your laminate floor cleaner. Again though check the dish soap to be sure it doesn’t contain any ammonia. Some people have used window cleaner diluted to clean these floors but the problem here is that many window-cleaning products contain ammonia.
If you decide to use the mild soap then ideally you will want to follow the first washing with a vinegar and water rinse to remove the entire soap residue. These are simple methods to cleaning your laminate floor with a simple homemade cleaner!
